The Different Harry Potter Houses

Gryffindor

Gryffindor is one of the four houses in the Harry Potter universe. The founder of Gryffindor house is Godric Gryffindor, and the house colors are scarlet and gold. The house animal is a lion and its ghost is Nearly-Headless Nick. The common room is located in Gryffindor Tower, and it is hidden behind the portrait of the Fat Lady, who only allows students in if they say the correct password. The common room is described as a “cozy, round room.” (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, J.K. Rowling, Chapter 7) The room is filled with comfy chairs, tables, and a large fireplace.  

Gryffindor’s traits include courage, bravery, determination, daring, nerve, and chivalry. The Gryffindor motto is “Their daring, nerve, and chivalry set Gryffindors apart.” Gryffindor house has notably contributed many members to Dumbledore’s Army and the Order of the Phoenix. Some notable Gryffindors include Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore, Hermione Granger, and Sirius Black.

Hufflepuff

Hufflepuff, created by Helga Hufflepuff, is one of the four houses at Hogwarts in the book/film series Harry Potter. The house colors are yellow and black, the house animal is a badger, and its ghost is the Fat Friar. The common room is in Hufflepuff Basement, which is located near the kitchens. To get access to the common room you must tap a barrel in a certain rhythm. One fact about Hufflepuff’s common room is that it is the only common room to have a security device to prevent students from other houses from coming in. Their common room is described as very cozy and welcoming. The common room is a large round room with low ceilings. It is also described as earthy, and contains many hanging plants, yellow and black sofas, and big round windows. 

Hufflepuff’s main traits include hard-working, just loyal, honest, and kind. They are normally seen as the friendliest house, but also the least talented. The Hufflepuff motto is “You might belong in Hufflepuff, where they are just and loyal. Those patient Hufflepuffs are true, and unafraid of toil.” A fun fact about Hufflepuff is that they have produced the least dark wizards of all four houses. Some evident Hufflepuffs are Cedric Diggory, Nymphadora Tonks, and Newt Scamander.

Ravenclaw

           There are four houses in the Harry Potter book/movie universe, Ravenclaw being one of them. The founder of Ravenclaw house is Rowena Ravenclaw, the house colors are blue and bronze, their house animal is an eagle, and their house ghost is the Grey Lady. The Ravenclaw common room is in one of Hogwarts’ many towers. To get access in the common room, you must answer a logic riddle. The room is decorated with arched windows and dark blue carpet. As well as tables, chairs, and bookcases. There is also a large, white, marble statue of the house founder, Rowena Ravenclaw next to the door leading to the dormitories above. 

                Ravenclaw is portrayed as wise, witty, and intelligent. Ravenclaws are also known for being logical and thoughtful. The Ravenclaw motto is “Wit beyond measure is a man’s greatest treasure.” Some noteworthy Ravenclaws include Luna Lovegood, Garrick Ollivander, and Gilderoy Lockhart.

Slytherin

Slytherin was founded by Salazar Slytherin. The houses colors are green and silver, the house animal is a serpent, and the house ghost is the Bloody Baron. The common room for Slytherin is in the dungeons of Hogwarts Castle, and underneath the Black Lake. To get in you must speak the password in front of the concealed stone door, and if it is correct, the door will slide open. The common room is depicted as a very dignified, yet cold ambience.  The room contains with black and green leather sofas, greenish lamps, and dark wood cupboards. The walls are adorned with tapestries of famous medieval Slytherins. Since the room is partially located under the Black Lake, the room has a greenish tint to it. 

                Slytherins are portrayed as resourceful, determination, cunning, and ambitious. In the Harry Potter books and movies, Slytherins are often depicted as evil, and are often judged because of the controversy between Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin. The Slytherin motto is “Slytherin will help you on your way to greatness.” Some prominent Slytherins include Merlin, Severus Snape, Bellatrix Lestrange, and Voldemort.
