Softball Interview w/ Mrs. Ingram

By Rachel Parsille

She's played countless tournaments herself and has coached hundreds. Despite injures and setbacks,  she has, and is yet still into Softball. She supports every team she has coached, including the teams she has played for. Ms. Shannon Ingram is a sixth grade World History teacher, here at Rockvale Middle School, RMS.

All, sports players of any type, have experienced downfall with injures and all sorts of other occurring issues. When asked if she had any times when she has wanted to quit, or have had injures, she answered, "I have torn my knee up, and had tennis elbow." Which are painful problems, and some players have quit due to these types of issues.

Covid has hit the world hard, and sports have never been hit harder. Softball being one of the many popular and seasonal sports, some rules have been changed. Ms. Ingram said, "Wearing masks, and having a smaller team is different, and you need to be more spread out."

She has devoted years of her life towards the sport. During her interview she was asked," How did you discover a love or fondness of softball?"

Ms. Ingram replied, "Having good teammates, putting time into it, and having good teamwork is one of the things that made it fun."

She was also asked how long she has been coaching, and she replied with five years. This will be her first year coaching at this school. She has been playing since high school and stuck with it.

When Ms. Ingram was asked how many games has the teams she has coached, and the amount of games, she replied with "Three to four hundred." When I asked why had she stuck with it she answered," I played in high school and loved it... and I have played since." Covid has hit the world hard, and sports have never been hit harder. Softball being one of the many popular and seasonal sports, Some rules have been changed, Ms. Ingram said," Wearing masks, and having a smaller team is different, and you need to be more spread out." Later on, she was asked how she had been playing before she became one of the coaches, She said," I used to play travel ball and had a tournament every week." When she was asked how long she plans on coaching, she pondered for a moment, and replied with," I'm hoping to coach for many years to come... You never know where life will take you." Those words rang in my head as she replied to my question. Good sportsmanship is a key factor in every activity, and in sports, it is what makes every good player and team.

Special thanks to Ms. Ingram, and newspaper staff.

Rockvale Archery's first tournament....

Rockvale Archery team is going to be having a tournament against Whitworth Buchanan middle school! They will be doing that this Saturday 2/27/2021. Everyone on the team is so excited about it and just can’t wait to compete for the first time. Not only will they be doing normal shooting but will be 3-D shooting, where they get to shoot targets that have pictures of animals on them. The team were going to have a tournament earlier, but couldn’t because coach Adair had to get tested. According to the some of the shooters, when thinking about the tournament they feel “excited since it is the first tournament” (Jayla Coffey). Others say, “I feel ok about the tournament. I feel nervous, excited and hopeful to not blow up an another bow” (Neal Duke 6B). Some inspiring words from Hayden Gregg “I feel exhilarated for the tournament because it has been so long due to COVID-19, but I am also a little nervous but like my dad always says don’t focus on the last shot just focus on the one you're doing.”  Now... LET'S CHEER ON OUR ROCKVALE ARCHERY TEAM!!!

From morning announcements:

4/13/21: Led by the Locked Down D of the backline Rockvale defeated Whitworth-Buchanan 5-1. Leo Velasquez, Luis Palma, Will Waldron, Anthony Cruz, and Juergen Padmore each scored for the Ravens.

4/15/21: The boys soccer team came up short 4/14 against Stewarts Creek but the boys battled all the way through to the final whistle. Ian Coleman had a solid game in goal to anchor the defense and Leo Velasquez held down the center of the pitch. Leo barely missed the scoring sheet with a great free kick.

4/21/21: The Rockvale soccer team dominated Rocky Fort 4/20 with a 6-2 victory. The Ravens were led by Leo Yarbough added to the goal count. Once again the backline held with their 'locked down D'.

ROckvale National cheer team

Our Rockvale Competition Cheerleading Team had a great year, despite all the changes because of Covid. They made it all the way to the state championship, winning their division and first place in semi-finals! I sat down with our cheer coaches to get their input.

What is cheer like this year with covid?

According to the coaches, this year was "different."  Over the summer they had follow the 6 feet rule and no stunts. Their time to practice was limited and had to do virtual try outs. This led to having two teams, but in the end the team decided to just combine.

Why do you like cheer?

Head coach, Ms. Rachel Butner said, "I cheered when I was in high school, and I love to be able to support the school."

How do you feel about the team? Do you think they are good at what they do?

"Amazing!  They work really hard and do a great job. They take so much time practicing and even taking their own time to practice." Ms. Butner said.

Do you feel that the stunts are dangerous, and do you trust them?

The majority feeling from the coaches was the stunts are fun but difficult to do. "We have seen concussions in the past, so we want to avoid it happening again. I do trust them a lot doing this, and I feel they trust each other." - Ms. Butner

Dance Club sponsors left to right are Angela Jackson, Sabrina Webb, and Jacquelyn Patterson.

Our school's dance club was inspired by a current student! This is the first time our school has done something like this. The dancers get to make up their own routines and are hopeful to show their Christmas dance to the school before summer break. The goal and premise behind the Rockvale Raven's Dance Club are to develop friendships, responsibility, empowerment, and creativity via movement and dance. This is not a dance team that will perform competitively but rather a club that supports creative expression with some occasional voluntary performances. If you want to try out for next year's club, look for information Fall 2021. -DD

rOCKVALE BOWLING TEAM

  1.  Did you ever bowl or ever have anyone in family or close friends bowl that got you into it?

I started my oldest daughter bowling when she was 3 years old because we had a bowling center in our neighborhood. It took off from there! She bowled all the way through high school and even got a great scholarship to bowl in college! (Yes, there are amazing college scholarships for bowling, a lot of people don't realize that!) My twin daughters followed in their sister's footsteps and now bowl for Siegel High.

    2.      What do you think makes a good team for bowling?

A good team consists of people who are willing to try new approaches if things aren't working out. They encourage and cheer each other on and don't allow a bad ball or frame get them down. Bowling is a combination of mental, physical, and science elements, and every good bowler acknowledges that.

  3.

How do you feel when you see the kids enjoying bowling?

I 'm not a good bowler myself, but I absolutely LOVE to watch kids bowl! I love how each bowler has their own way of approaching the line. It's like an art! I'm as much a cheerleader for my bowlers as I am a coach!

    4.      How many years have you been coaching for bowling?

While I've been on the parent side of bowling matches for about 20 years, this is only my second year as a coach. Last year I was assistant coach, and this year I was head coach.

    5.       What year was the spotlight year for Rockvale Bowling?

Since it's only my second year coaching and last year we didn't even get to finish the season, I'd say this year! Plus this year we took two bowlers to individual championships, and that was really awesome!
